ATM News Network: International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropical Countries (ICRISAT) and Indian Oilseeds and Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC) signed an MoU to enhance production of quality oilseeds in India.
Director General of ICRISAT Dr Jacqueline Hughes and IOPEPC President Nilesh Vira signed with the aim of strengthening long-term cooperation to increase the quantity and quality of oilseeds in India.
The partnership will focus on cooperation at all levels, including expanding areas under cultivation, deploying scientific technologies, providing better quality certified seeds to farmers and strengthening the supply chain of oilseeds.
In addition, this partnership will also promote food safety principles. To support the growth of the Indian oilseeds sector by recommending policies and programs to the Government of India.
“Farmers want oilseed crops that can withstand climate change. Changing monsoon patterns are affecting oilseed crops. Such crops usually take 110-120 days to mature. Farmers do not want to grow oilseeds due to adverse weather conditions. We need to find a solution for that," said Mr Vira.
IOPEPC director-groundnut panel convenor Kishor Tanna said farmers do not want to grow oilseeds, especially groundnuts, so India is importing 15 million tonnes of edible oil.
ICRISAT Director General Dr Hughes highlighted the need to remove middlemen in the export value chain to increase the profitability of smallholder farmers. He also emphasized ICRISAT's commitment to finding solutions to eliminate aflatoxins in peanuts that are harmful to consumers.
IOPEPC is recognised by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. The organization acts as a common platform for Indian oilseeds and vegetable oil exporters, foreign buyers, Government of India, research and development institutes for oilseeds and vegetable oils in India, international organizations and many others globally with authorized bodies.
