Mr Tomar said that pesticides are poisonous substances. They are registered for use in the country by the Registration Committee only after they are satisfied that they are effective or safe for human health, animals and the environment. According to the leaflet approved by the registration committee, pesticides used do not have any adverse effect on humans, animals and the environment. Accordingly, glyphosate is registered only in tea plantations and non-crop areas. There is no ban on the use of glyphosate in India.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court stayed the central government's notification to ban the use of the herbicide glyphosate for three months.
Earlier, the central government issued a notification on October 25, 2022, that glyphosate can be used only by pest control operators due to concerns over its adverse effects on human and animal health. Crop Care Federation of India, an association of agricultural chemicals, had approached the court against it.
