ATM News Network: According to the findings of a report, India is the second largest agricultural producer in the world after China, earning USD 543 billion in the year 2021. India has surpassed the US ($224 billion) and the entire European Union ($278 billion). After China (31% share), India is the only country with an agriculture global share in double digits (13%).
According to data compiled by the Centre for Environment and Agriculture, India uses 61,702 tonnes of agrochemicals. India's share is only 2% of the global consumption of 26,61,124 tonnes, reports AgroPages.com quoting the Crop Care Federation of India.
Interestingly, in the Indian agrochemical market, 51% of category-wise pesticides are used extensively on cotton, rice, vegetables and others, followed by fungicides and bactericides at 32% and herbicides at 16%.
Fungicides are used to prevent or eradicate fungal infections from plants or seeds. Apart from significant use during storage in the field, fungicides are widely used to protect tubers, fruits and vegetables. They are also used on ornamental plants, trees, field crops, cereals and turf grasses.
The herbicide segment in India is stable. Where other methods are not effective, the use of herbicides on perennial parasitic weeds is convenient. Herbicides can be used effectively in crops grown in areas where manual and mechanical weeding is not possible. Chemical use has also increased as labour becomes scarcer.
Although China leads the way in agricultural production, India ranks 9th in pesticide use. The US and most other countries in the European Union, including France, Spain, Italy and Germany, use more pesticides than India on a per unit area and production basis. The US is the largest consumer of agrochemicals at 4,07,779 tonnes in the retrieved data. Then Brazil, China and other countries are listed.
India ranks 9th in pesticide use. It thus proves that Indian farmers use the recommended doses on different crop segments and thus ensures equitable use. The role of Indian corporations is significant. Farmers emphasize the safe and proper use of agrochemicals.
“Some self-interested foreign-funded people spread false propaganda with the aim of undermining the market success of our agricultural products globally. Many selfish people in the world who want to hold back India are funding NGOs to publish fraudulent fake news to create fear not only among the rural masses but also among educated urban consumers, housewives, bureaucrats, and scientists.”
