The efforts of the state government are getting a positive response and the demand for GI-tagged hapus mangoes is increasing. In 2020, Konkan has received the GI tag symbol. So many mango producers are supplying GI-tagged mangoes in the market.
On average, 40,000 boxes of mangoes arrive from the Konkan division at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee in Vashi every day. More private companies and mango farmers sell GI-tagged mangoes directly from the farm to consumers.
'Mangoes from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and other regions are sent as Ratnagiri or Devgad Hapus. But with GI tagging, consumers get real Hapus mangoes from the Konkan region, said Sanjay Pansare, Director of, the Vashi Agricultural Produce Market Committee.
Raigad, Sindhudurg and Thane districts have got GI tags. Because of this, retailers are buying GI-tagged Hapus mangoes in the market committee. Because their customers are assured of what they are buying, he said.

Nidhi Nirmal, Business Head and Director, Kisan Connect Safe Foods Pvt Ltd, says that different types of mangoes are entering the markets. The origin of the mangoes cannot be ascertained for their authenticity. But the GI tag helps in knowing the authenticity of the Hapus mango along with its place of origin.
She said that the company has developed a GI tag. In this, the customer gets information about the place of origin of the mango, the exact location of the orchards and other details. We are expecting to sell around 75,000 boxes of mangoes with GI tagging this season.
Prakash Chaugule, a farmer in Ratnagiri, said that many varieties of mangoes from other parts of the country and even South Africa are being sold to consumers at cheap prices as hapus mangoes. This affects our business.
With GI tagging, consumers get the high-quality taste of authentic Hapus mangoes from the right place. Not all Hapus mango farmers have registered for GI tagging, but the number is increasing as everyone wants to take advantage of it.
