ATM News Network : Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released a compendium on Global Millet Council (Shri Anna) Millet Cereals Standards. Firstly, the Alikadech Food Safety Authority has notified an all-inclusive set of group standards for 15 varieties of millet as well as millet products. These rules will be applicable from September.
This includes pearl millet flour, jowar flour, ragi flour and mixed millet flour. Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said, "One way to encourage country millets scientifically is to fix regulatory standards. FSSAI has for the first time come up with a comprehensive set of standards for all 15 types of cereals produced in our country. This will ensure the quality of grains and their products in the country."
This will help us get better value realisation and brand building, said APEDA President M. Angamuthu.
FSSAI officials said that many cereals have their origins in India, for which first-rate standards have been fixed. Africa has standards for some cereals, while the Codex only has standards for sorghum and millet. That's why many pulses are native to India. For example, ragi is not a standard in America. India has published the first comprehensive set of standards for millets, said a senior FSSAI official.
