ATM News Network: Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Purushottam Rupala briefed on the significant achievements of Fisheries Department in the last 9 years in New Delhi. The Union Minister said that the promising sector of fisheries in India has provided livelihood, employment and entrepreneurship to more than 2.8 crore fishermen and fish farmers at the primary level and lakhs of people in the value chain.
He said the sector is also offering high returns. India is the third largest producer of fish in the world, accounting for about 8% of global fish production. Rupala further said that in the last nine years, the Government of India has taken transformative initiatives to develop the fisheries and aquaculture sector holistically and increase the income of fish farmers. On this occasion, the Union Minister highlighted some major initiatives and results.
In the last 9 years, Rupala informed that the Government of India has increased its investment in the sector of fisheries and aquaculture. Since 2015, the central government has sanctioned a cumulative investment of Rs 38,572 crore.
