ATM News Network: After a two-year hiatus, onion exports have picked up on rising demand in West Asia. India has so far exported 15.19 lakh tonnes of onion in the financial year 2022-23. In comparison, 15.38 lakh tonnes of onion was exported in the entire financial year 2021-22.
The export share is 10 to 15 percent of the total onion produced in the country. In which Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat are leading. Onion is exported during Kharif, Late Kharif and Rabi seasons. Indian onion is mainly in demand from West Asia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Nepal.
While the Sri Lankan market has been hit by the country's economic slowdown, demand from other countries is increasing. Subsequent large-scale production has made domestic and export-quality onion readily available. Almost 15-16 lakh tonnes have been exported in the last three financial years.
Meanwhile, farmers' organizations have demanded a price stabilization fund to prevent a complete collapse of onion prices in the wholesale market.
Maharashtra is the leader in the production of rabi onion, and the farmers of Nashik are leading in the production. Farmers expressed the possibility of price collapse when new or summer onions come in the market. This onion planted in December-January is harvested after March. Farmers usually store onions in field onion bags to protect them from moisture and sprouting.
