ATM News Network: Farmers are protesting in Maharashtra as onion produce hit the lowest prices. In this background, the central government has ordered the states to plan the purchase of onion, Apeda has published a report citing The Hindu Business Line. Experts are of the opinion that although exports are strong and high during April-December of the current financial year, prices will not rise significantly as the rabbi crop will arrive within a month.
Agriculture Commissioner P. K. Singh held a meeting with officials of state governments. In this meeting, he asked to prepare a procurement plan to help the farmers. Anticipation of a bumper rabbi harvest compared to onions grown in the Kharif season has created a bearish sentiment in the market, a senior agriculture ministry official said.
NCP MP Supriya Sule had expressed concern over onion export through Twitter. In that context, there are no restrictions or ban on the export of onion from India,' the Ministry of Commerce clarified on Sunday.
According to Apeda, the government's agriculture-export promotion body, onion exports from April-December 2022-23 stood at 17.22 lakh tonnes or $394.13 million. 15.37 lakh tonnes were exported in the entire financial year 2021-22. This year's onion exports could be a record 24.18 lakh tonnes in 2016-17, officials said.
The late supply of the Kharif variety has increased as farmers are keen to sell their entire crop within three days of harvest, fearing wastage due to rising temperatures in February. Farmers usually sell the late Kharif crop within a week of harvesting, because its shelflife is too short.
