The nursery business in the field of agriculture is gaining momentum. The
Nashik district which is one of the leader in country in producing and exporting
vegetables, grows 70 percent of its vegetable and fruit produce with nursery
saplings. The tomato is one of the important crop in Nashik. Nashik provides
tomato in all major markets of the country especially Mumbai. The availability
of the desired variety of the tomato has supported the nursery business in
Nashik. Most of the samplings of tomato are brought by farmers from nursery,
instead of growing them by themselves.
While speaking to Agri Trade Media, Dnyaneshwar Jadhav, owner of Shital
High-Tech nursery informed, “The annual turnover of tomato sampling is
around 5 to 7 lakh depending on the season and tilt of farmers towards crop.
There is no such favourite variety they don’t depends on specific variety every
year the trending variety changes as per results given by the new variety. The
capacity of the varieties to fight the diseases changes, so the farmers to change
the variety of their crop according to the weather conditions. We provide the
varieties as per the demand of the market.”
He said that the farmers are turning to nursery grown saplings as they get
ready to grow plants. The tomato plants which get easily affected by diseases
in their early growing days create fear of double sowing as well as the risk of
crop loss is high. In nursery these saplings are grown in controlled atmosphere
and the risk factor lies with the nursery. So, it always favours the farmers. They
decide when to plant the saplings and start the season. It is helping the tomato
crop to flourish in Nashik.
