The shipment of pomegranates by INI Farms lands in the US with a newly developed system approach.
ATM News Network: India has resumed exporting pomegranate arils to the US after a four-year hiatus. In October 2018, the US suspended access to Indian pomegranates arils. However, India regained entry in November 2022 following efforts by the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) and export promotion agency Apeda to reopen the market.
Under a newly developed systems approach, which includes product monitoring and quality control across the entire supply chain, including farms, the first shipments reached US shores in March.
Leading Indian exporter INI Farms successfully made airfreight shipments to both the East and West Coast, with fruit landing on 1 March 2023. The updated protocol includes field-level monitoring and addresses pest risks associated with Mediterranean fruit fly.
Purnima Khandelwal, CEO of INI Farms, said the success of the program was key not only for the US but also for other significant markets such as Australia, which had granted access to Indian pomegranate arils based on the same protocol.
She added that this was the first time a systems approach had been designed, developed, and implemented in India. It could be a useful tool to open up global markets while ensuring full control over pest and disease risks.
