ATM News Network: The Union Cabinet on March 31, 2021, approved the 'Food Processing Industry-Production-Incidental-Exemption' (PLISFPI) to create global food manufacturing companies in line with India's natural resources and promote Indian brands of food products in the international market with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore. Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Pralhad Singh Patel said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha that the scheme for these central areas has been approved.
The implementation of this scheme will expand the capacity of processed food products and generate employment. The first component of the plan deals with the promotion of four major food products. Like, ready-to-cook/ready-to-eat foods including cereal-based products, processed fruits and vegetables, seafood and mozzarella cheese.
The second component is related to the production of innovative or organic products by small and medium enterprises, which includes a free range - of egg products in four segments - eggs, and poultry meat. The third factor relates to support for branding and marketing abroad to promote the emergence of a strong Indian brand. Out of savings, another component has been added for cereal-based products with an outlay of Rs 800 crore in 2022-23.
This scheme is not state or region specific. An application from M/s Sanna Enterprises in the North East region for cereal-based products was received and selected. However, there are various food processing units located in North Eastern states under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
In a written reply to another question in the Lok Sabha, Prahlad Singh Patel informed that the Ministry of Food Processing Industries has so far approved a total of 3 agri-processing clusters, 28 integrated cold chain industries, 34 food processing parks, the creation of 5 backward and forward linkages and 5 Operation Greens projects in Uttar Pradesh. Given, this will create 47946 direct and indirect jobs.
These projects involve a subsidy of Rs 469 crore, about 19.61 lahks MT/year processing and preservation capacity and an investment of about Rs 1,562 crore. Among these projects, one agro-processing industry, eight integrated cold chain industries, 21 food processing industries and five operation greens projects have been approved from 2019-20.
